About the podcast

How many blogs and podcasts about success have you come across? Ten? Twenty? Maybe even more? They’re everywhere, and understandably so. Success stories inspire us to dream, to see what's possible, and to strive for greatness. But is that all we need? Is success the only story worth telling?

"Off Script" takes a different approach by shining a light on failure rather than success. It doesn’t dismiss or diminish success stories; instead, it tells the stories of startups that never "started", the educational pursuits the dreams that were never realized. These are the stories of failure, and they matter just as much.

For every success, there’s a potential failure, just as for every right decision, there's an alternative wrong. While the world often glorifies and celebrates success, we rarely talk about the ones who fell off the script. "Off Script" shares their stories—raw, unfiltered, and true. Because these stories deserve to be told, and because failure is as much a part of life as success.

Olufunke (Olu) is a technical writer, and developer advocate, who—like everyone else—loves a good success story. In fact, she was inspired by the story of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, a man whose life seemed defined by failure until he became one of the most powerful leaders in the world. That story sparked Olu’s curiosity about other "0 to 10" heroes—people who started at the bottom and rose against all odds.

She started a blog, "The Phenomenal Corner", to interview people like that. But as life and the 2020 pandemic happened, the blog faded away. Yet, a thought kept nagging at her: What about the people who tried but didn’t make it? The ones who, despite their best efforts, couldn’t shake off the failure? Or the people who were once deemed most likely to succeed but found success eluding them at every turn?

Olu realized that while she loved stories of triumph, it seemed unfair that we often ignore those who fail. Sometimes, those failures shouldn’t be forgotten or swept under the rug. Failure isn’t something to be ashamed of—it’s part of the human experience, and it deserves a place in the conversation.

And so, Olu set out to document the lives of people whose scripts didn’t go as planned. People who dreamed of soaring high and breaking barriers, only to fall hard and find themselves forgotten. "Off Script" is a space for their stories—stories of failure that refuse to be ignored, told by someone who believes that every story, even the ones that don’t end in victory, deserves to be heard.
